This is our second blog post to discuss the 7 Deadly IT Sins that were recently named by Sophos. For today’s post, we are going to look at Mac Security Malice.
The battle between Mac and PCs is long-standing. On some level, this should be a shock to no one. Still, what can be shocking is that it can be difficult to find a technology professional that doesn’t have a very strong opinion one way or another when asked about PCs vs. Macs.
Mac Security Malice: The Issues
Regardless of whether the Macs within your environment are company owned or part of your BYOD program, you have to make sure they don’t pose a threat to your data assets.
A single breach in your security could be detrimental to a company. If you are in an industry that is heavily regulated and is subjected to compliance audits, this can even lead to fines and penalties. In our experience, we have seen that there are two main pillars of issues that contribute to Mac Security Malice: manageability and security. Let’s take a look at both of those really quick.
It’s true, Mac’s don’t have the same features that allow for system administrators to have visibility into the system that Windows machines have.
This is inarguably a huge contributor to Mac security malice in the enterprise as it makes it more difficult for these machines to be centrally managed. Things like software updates and patch management become increasingly complicated. Yet, these things are critical to the security of an organization.
Another contributor to the Mac security malice faced by enterprise organizations is that if IT doesn’t take Mac support seriously, users often end up getting their own support directly from Apple and charging it back to the business. BYOD support can cost up to $49 for Macs and $29 for iPads and iPhones per incident. If a policy is not in place that keeps users from going to Apple directly, these costs could add up to huge amounts of money.
False Sense of Security
The second contributor to Mac Security Malice in the enterprise is the false sense of security that many Mac users have. For whatever reason, many users believe that Macs are invincible against malware and other types of viruses.
This is very wrong. Many types of Mac OSx malware have recently been making their rounds through the security newswires. MacDefender and the Mac Flashback Trojan are just a few examples of this. Not only that, but Macs can also harbor different types of Windows malware that they can then spread throughout your enterprise.
In fact, a study from Sophos reported that one in every five Mac computers is harboring some kind of malware. Sadly, cybercriminals often view Macs as easy targets. Who can blame the logic? Mac owners are much less likely to be running anti-virus on their computers. This makes it much more likely that Mac security malice will wreak havoc on your internal infrastructure.
